JOTTINGS IN NOTEBOOKS

Excerpted from
NEAR DWELLERS
by Basil Warner

- Planning for the unknown or plotting against the unexpected may keep hands busy and minds sharp, perhaps at ease, but never completely secure.
- Living free means not having to fulfil expectations but living up to something just the same.
- Never battle others for what’s theirs, whatever it may be, even though you may know how to better use whatever it is they are misusing.
- Most inventions may make tasks easier, but nothing is yet invented that makes life better. We each have to create that for ourselves.
- Living well means living satisfied. Daily life made easier is not necessarily daily life made better.
- Fear holds no power over knowledge.
- Even bad roads can lead home.
- Is love of money the root of all evil? Or is evil at the root of all money?
- If you owe an old debt and there’s no one around to collect it, the debt remains unsettled. Find a way to pay. Pay what is right and fair. Pay until you have made compensation. Fully resolve your debt. Keep paying until then.
- Someone somewhere must have said this before. If not, I’m saying it now: While struggling to live, also remember that being dead lasts a longer time.
- Being emptied of everything makes a difference.
- Survival is not a hit-or-miss game.
- Every now and then comes a bridge that should be set on fire after crossing.
- Ponder everything. Prepare for anything. Expect nothing.
